COWICHAN FOLK DANCERS

The Cowichan Valley has been home to the Cowichan International Folk Dancers for thirty-two years as indicated on the Certificate of Incorporation. Unofficially, however, the group has been dancing for about forty years when Mike Crown, a former member of the Saanich International Folk Dancers, moved to Duncan and initiated a new group. Our database holds an enormous selection of cultural music and dances. Many of these cultures had developed dances that were compatible with the musical instruments of their time, regardless how rudimentary they might have been.  Every hand gesture, foot placement and movement of the body was meant to tell a story that held a special meaning for the group.  As folk dancers we have the privilege of repeating these dances, some of which had been performed throughout the centuries. It's a very humbling and powerful experience. I am particularly fond of the Israeli, Romanian, and Armenian dances. The music is passionate with the rhythm almost leading you through the dance. Our selection of dances comes from Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Bolivia, Turkey, to name just a few. Regularly, we are introduced to new dances by our very talented and knowledgeable teachers. We are a very social folk dancing club and enjoy supporting and dancing with other clubs on the Island, Salt Spring Island and occasionally on Gabriola Island. We hold in house dance parties and workshops.  Our group meets every Monday evening from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Mill Bay Community Hall.  No partner necessary as we dance mostly circle dances.  Your first visit is free and we have a drop in fee of $5.00.  Our yearly membership fee is only $85.00, and we dance throughout the year.

HAPPINESS IS HEALTHY! ~ monthly affirmation       by Stephanie Ceirns

I, choose to look at my grief in a new way.  Each time in life when my needs are not met, I feel a bit of grief.

When a job ends or a friendship changes it is normal to feel grief.  I welcome my grief into my heart.  I befriend my grief.  The grief I feel is my perceived loss of love, affection, an opportunity, or a relationship.  When I am sad it is like exercise for my heart, when I comfort me.

It is up to me to reassure myself that all will be well.

After a loss I surround myself with supportive people who understand me.  I allow myself to feel the loss of the dream when a relationship changes.  I let the pain of the grief go through me as if I were a gold wire.  I accept the situation wholeheartedly.  I keep that faith that I am right where I am supposed to be for my souls highest growth.  I embrace the challenges in my life as if everything is going just as I planned.  Bravely facing my grief empowers my heart and creates in my spirit a feeling of empowerment.

I am a creative child of Universal Love and Universal Love feels brave when I am brave.
